Design is a story that needs to be told. It is a long story going back to a time when we evolved human capacities to create. Our creative abilities stand alongside evolution as the cultural counterpart to evolution by selection of the forms best adapted for life. We have evolved in body and mind to create intentionally – by design. We acquired manual dexterity for tool making and use, self-awareness to adapt our environment to our needs, a lively imagination to envision what nature did not provide and embed the stories that make us human in the world we create. It is a story that is full of drama, poignancy and really interesting characters. Characters who have not only created the world we live in, but have invented and reinvented many times over the way we go about creating it.
After a decades long career creating objects, environments, organizations, graphic communication and services, I have turned my attention to creating narratives with words.
Currently I am deep in an intensive research phase, unearthing the essential story points of how we became, and how we continue to become designers. I am hunting and gathering the material for essays, stories, poems and books looking at the long journey we have taken as Homo designer.
I am writing a book about the unfolding of design practice, guided by ancient creative instincts. I am writing essays that will allow me to expose some of my thinking to a larger audience as I prepare for commercial publication. I’ll post some of these essays to my blog. I invite you to visit and become part of a community that shares my passion for the potential that lies within design. By bringing awareness to WHY we design, we can prepare ourselves to design better.
I welcome opportunities to collaborate on projects that interest me. Please contact me if you are working on something that could benefit from deep thinking about design.
